Written and Illustrated by Timothy Young
I am one of the few children’s authors or reviewers who do not like Halloween, but I loved this book. This is a great picture book for second grade level readers that uses few words, yet packs a punch filled with suspense.
The suspense builds with every page using a combination of second grade level words, simple sentences that allow second graders to use their imaginations to fill in ideas that are not expressed in words, and eerie illustrations that further spark the reader into thinking ahead in the story.
Timothy Young demonstrates his talent with words combined with his illustrations to absolutely delight second grade readers. This story would be a fun read aloud in the class book during Halloween week. It would also be a fun and spooky tale for parents to read at bedtime. The twist at the end of the suspense filled pages allows for a laugh and fun surprise, so second graders can regroup and go to sleep without fear.
Second grade readers of low and higher reading levels will be able to comprehend that sense of fun in the story and perfect reading skills by wanting to read this great book over and over. It may even inspire them to read aloud to a younger sibling, making them learn the success and enjoyment of reading for fun.
